Who We Are

Amateur radio operators utilize their training, skills, and equipment to provide vital emergency communications during crises, especially when All Else Fails®. Hams play a critical role in community support by assisting during storms or disasters that disrupt essential communication infrastructure, including cell towers and both wired and wireless networks. The unique capability of amateur radio to function completely independently of the internet and phone systems enables rapid response. An amateur radio station can be established in just minutes in virtually any location. Hams can swiftly set up a wire antenna in a tree or on a mast, connect it to a radio and power source, and effectively communicate with others in need.

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) is composed of licensed amateurs who voluntarily register their qualifications and equipment with local ARES leadership to serve public communication needs during disasters. 

Every licensed amateur, whether a member of the ARRL or any other local or national organization, is welcome to apply for ARES membership. Training may be beneficial or required for full participation in ARES activities, so we encourage inquiries at the local level for specific information. Because ARES is an Amateur Radio program, only licensed radio amateurs are eligible for membership. While having emergency-powered equipment is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite for joining.
